Having an intention to exercise is always a wonderful start, but pairing it up with motivation will often result in success. The part of the equation that tends to be the most difficult for people is motivation. I mean, it's summer, the season of ice cream, BBQs, and other deliciousness.
- the general desire or willingness of someone to do something.
I often hear people say "Starting next month, I'm going to start exercising" or "Right after the holiday, I'll whip myself into shape". Don't get me wrong. I love a planned future, but in this case, there really is no better time than now.
So the big question is: how do we motivate ourselves to get moving?
Rest easy- Here are 5 ways to get yourself motivated for exercise:
Buddy Up: When you make plans with someone to be somewhere at a specific time, you are less likely to bail. So go find that accountability partner to motivate each other!
Try Something New: If you stick to one type of exercise, switch it up and try something new. Working your body in a different way keeps you physically and mentally engaged, which means you are less likely to get bored. If you do cardio based exercises, you can opt for hiking, biking, roller blading, dancing, etc. The options are practically endless!
Take In the Sights: Exercise doesn't always mean going into a gym. Check out hiking trails or explore a part of town that you aren't familiar with. You'll be so consumed with taking in the sights that it won't feel like exercising.
Buy New Workout Gear: You know that feeling when you put on a new outfit that looks great and fits perfectly? Feels pretty damn good right? Invest in some new workout gear and get inspired to work out.
Show Some Respect: Instead of only looking at exercise as something you have to do, look at it as something that you want to do. You want to do it because you respect your body and it is good for you. Let's face it, looking at exercising as a chore isn't appealing to anyone. Just reframing the story around exercise can help to motivate yourself.
