Healthy Morning Routine

I had a conversation with a friend the other day about how crazy the day starts the second she wakes up in the morning. She immediately checks her phone, gets the day started with the kids and runs off to work. So I asked her “is that how every day starts? No wonder why the days seem chaotic!”

How we start the day off sets the tone for the rest of the day. I admit, I was guilty of doing what my friend did. The first thing I did was grab my phone and catch up on social media and check emails. The immediate bombardment of information, news, selfies and tasks I would have to do, would get my brain revved up, and not in a good way.

I started to realize how bad this was when I would leave the house anxious, overwhelmed and exhausted. And it was only 7am. This was not good. I knew I had make changes because having these feelings so early in the morning just wasn’t an option anymore. I was going to lose my mind. I couldn’t afford for this to happen. Literally. I hadn’t met my deductibles yet [insert insane panic moment here].

I started by taking steps to incorporate a few simple things into my morning routine. The key here is consistency, which eventually becomes second nature. I want to preface this by saying all of this takes 15 minutes in the morning (before breakfast). If I have more time it’s about 20-25. Now, before you can even say "But I don't have extra time in the morning", let's discuss. Can you find an extra 15 minutes to find the right outfit? To perfect your make up? To catch up on social media? To watch the news? If you answered yes to any of these, keep reading. It’s a small amount of time to reap so many benefits.

My morning routine:

Meditate- this isn’t about sitting on the floor with candles around me chanting. Sure, some people do that, but for the everyday person, it’s pretty simple. I get out of bed and sit on the floor upright, so my body is awake and I don’t fall back asleep. I close my eyes and just breathe in deep through my nose and out through my mouth. I either express gratitude for things in my life, or I repeat a mantra that I come up with, to reflect my intention for the day (e.g. I will open up my heart to possibilities or I will practice acceptance). Heck, you can even say “I will be calm and not lose my $hit today” if that is what works for you. Do whatever works for you. Repeat your mantra for 5-10 minutes.

Lemon water- I drink a glass of room temperature lemon water every morning as soon as I wake up. I can’t stress enough, the benefits of doing so. It jump-starts your organs and kick-starts your metabolism for the day. And it tastes good. Boom.
Stretch- this is great for folks who wake up tight and achy, like me. I take 5 minutes to do some light stretching, especially for the back, neck and shoulders.

Eat breakfast- replenishing the body after a night of fasting also helps your metabolism fire up. A healthy blend of protein (eggs, lean protein or yogurt), healthy fats (avocado) and complex carbs (whole grain or sprouted grains) will give you fuel for your day. Get some healthy food ideas here.
The result: a much calmer and happier me. And who wouldn’t like a calmer and happier you?
